Located in the Casanare Department in northern Colombia, the Mardue artisans craft exquisite baskets using fibers harvested from the Moriche palm, a species that grows in and around swamps and other wet areas in tropical South America.
Located in a remote reserve, these artisans have to travel two hours by mule to reach the closest city of Arauca. Due to the weak phone signal in the community and the fact that their home is not reachable by public transportation, these artisans are faced with logistical and organizational challenges that result in limited access to steady work and consistent orders. Currently, most of the family income comes from farming as well as products they’re able to sell during the annual artisan fair in Bogotá.

Hand weavers of Sandoná, Nariño, created every jewelry box that comes with the earrings inspired by the bright and colorful life of the sea world with natural Iraca, one of the richest and most delicate fibers of the country. Additionally, a limited edition selection of Iraca Oval Boxes and Totes selected by Sophia Li, can be bought with any pair of earrings at no additional markup. All styles were bought directly from the artisans’ stock in order to help them promote their own designs.
The give back: Sophia Li will be donating 100% of her proceeds for a special development project in agriculture with the Guna Dule community, one of the most remote communities we work with. The project will focus on maximizing responsible production of the Zapote /Sapote fruit on their land.

Los protagonistas: 2 de nuestros socios artesanos colombianos clave. Ana Sofía, una joyera local radicada en Bogotá, elaboró artesanalmente cada pieza siguiendo las formas y texturas de las especies de coral del Caribe como “Zonathids” y “Discosoma”. Tejedores manuales de Sandoná, Nariño, crearon cada joyero que viene con los aretes inspirados en la vida brillante y colorida del mundo marino con Iraca natural, una de las fibras más ricas y delicadas del país. Además, una selección de edición limitada de Iraca Oval Boxes and Totes seleccionados por Sophia Li se puede comprar con cualquier par de aretes sin recargo adicional. Todos los estilos se compraron directamente de las existencias de los artesanos para ayudarlos a promocionar sus propios diseños.
La devolución: Sophia Li donará el 100% de sus ingresos para un proyecto de desarrollo especial en agricultura con la comunidad Guna Dule, una de las comunidades más remotas con las que trabajamos.
